NPR Reflection: 3

3 years after pandemic school closings, how were kids and parents affected?

1. Why did I choose this story?

The reason I chose this story was that I was discussing this subject a few days ago with my mom who is the director/principal of a charter school in California. She was talking to me about her concern surrounding low test scores not just at her school but all over the country due to the COVID school closures. I wanted to listen to this story because I was curious about what new solutions if any, they had come up with to this major problem that students are facing around the world.

2. Below are a few questions that I believe the reporter might have asked her sources...

-Are the lasting effects of COVID impacts (teen mental health, low test scores, etc) due to the havoc of COVID or kids having to stay at home?

-What was the problem with remote learning?

-What are the lasting effects of the COVID closures (surrounding education)?

-How do we move forward from this point?

3. Addressing how the journalists take on this project...

The journalist working on this project had the goal of showing the lasting effects of the COVID closures, on education. I think her idea for the story probably came from everyone's question what do we do to come back from COVID's effects on education? For this story, she needed to interview people who work in the school system and are seeing these effects firsthand. This includes teachers, principals, school board members, and even parents of struggling students. Another aspect that is important for the journalist to look at is the research behind this issue. Making sure she has a thorough understanding of the effects COVID has had on students' mental well-being, as well as statistics of test scores.
